The release of FourBound 1.5 is drawing extremely close. I am probably hours away from working on the final boss. By next week, I should have everything packaged and ready to go. As this progresses, both the blog and the website are slowly being redesigned. When the game is released, they will both serve much more of a purpose.
Firstly, the FourBound blog will no longer focus only on EarthBound projects. There will be new EarthBound projects in the future, but alongside that I plan to experiment with new engines.
On the main site, there will be a “Remake” page. Twice every week it will be updated with a secret. Secrets containing spoilers will be marked as such, but otherwise they will help you out in the game a lot. The longer it has been out, the more descriptive the secrets will get.
For instance, there are a few interlinked, hidden sidequests that earn you a lot of bonuses as you go along in the game. If you don’t end up finding them, don’t worry, because in the end you can learn about them on the site (under the spoilers of course) and try them out later on. I implemented these to add replay value. Trust me, FourBound has a LOT more replay value than the original EarthBound, and it is quite a bit more player-friendly too.
All the important dialog has been re-written, not only to be clearer, but also to show the reactions of the party members in their various situations. There will be humor like before, and there will also be drama, anticipation, and even more to look forward to.
I am very proud of the quality of the remake compared to the original hack. It’s very bland in comparison. I changed probably 70% more of the game in half the time it took to make FourBound (even counting the hiatuses I took now and then).
Be prepared for new environments, new characters, new personalities, and a new experience from one of your favorite classic SNES games.
As I play-test it, there will be more screenshots and analysis coming your way, but nothing too spoilerific. Most of the spoilers are around the very end of the game. The end is going to be even more incredible, don’t go in expecting the same thing as before.
This Remake will reach 2.0 status after enough people have played it and put in their suggestions/glitch spottings/additional ideas. Typically, you will not have to restart your playthrough when a new version comes out. Just replace the ROM but name it the same thing in the same location. Your savestates should work within reaason.
*IMPORTANT NOTE: You absolutely can NOT do the same with a FourBound version below 1.5. This will lead to a multitude of problems. Strictly speaking, they are not the same game anymore. The data has been organized differently, and so has the coding, graphics, a lot of other stuff... You’ll be screwed over.
If you haven’t completed the original, take this opportunity to start fresh.
